stranger

Stranger
Stranger is a trailer produced by a pair of media students telling the story of a young aged girl feeling left suicidal after numerous events of suffering from bullying. It won the runners up position for the best teen movie at media awards 2008.
To start of with, there is a variety of camera shots and camera movements within the trailer which brings out the effects which the producer wants. There are many examples of when close ups are used within the trailer. For example when the girl is crying, close ups are used to make the viewer feel sympathetic towards the character and we get a closer look on the girls facial expressions so we can relate to how she is feeling. Long shots are used quite a lot aswell. This type of shot relates to the title of the trailer, as a long shot shows us how much the girl is outcasted and alone from the rest of the world, signifying that she is a stranger.A high angle shot is used at the beginning of the trailer when the girl tries to commit suicide by drowning herself in a bath tub. This type of shot is used to give us an overview of what is happening, and since we are viewing the situation from a high view we get a sense of feeling powerful, as if we were God and telling the girl to not go forward with what she is doing and raise her head from the water.

Some clips in the trailer are zoomed into to give the impression that something is going to happen. For example the bath tub is zoomed into at the beginning of the trailer to signify that something bad is going to happen relating to the girl trying to drown herself. There is also a connection of shots used together to create a greater effect, like when the zoom movement is used in connection with the long shot, so we start of from a long distance and slowly move towards the girl, which shows us how she is seperated from everyone else showing how alone she is.

There are both diagetic and non diagetic sound effects used within the trailer. The types of diagetic sounds which are used within the trailer are pieces of important dialogue and sound effects like footsteps and banging against the wall. These sounds come from the people bullying the girl and they are bold and loud signifying the strenght and power of the people bullying her. Other examples are shown when the girl shuts a bathroom door and locks herself in, showing that she is alone and feels helpless, and she just wants to get away from this life. The dialogue used in this trailer is just a small proportion of the diagetic sounds. The dialogue shows just the important pieces from the film, so we get an idea of what the film is about. For example when one of the bullys says ‘You don’t belong here’ we get the idea that she is in trouble and she is suffering from bullying. Non diagetic sounds used in the trailer are things like the soundtrack. The music has a very slow beat with a faint voice singing in it, and the song itself was created because the artist had lost someone close to them, and this trailer is about feeling suicidal which relates to death.

There is a lot of editing which is used within the trailer. Each clip is edited to relate to the next one, giving a better understanding of the story to the viewer.there are a lot of cuts used within the trailer to move onto the next part of the story, so a greater range of the story is given away.Cuts are also used to continue the story and keep it going.Fade in’s are used within the trailer to make the scene more dramatic then using a cut, but it does the same role and continues the story. But the use of a fade in in this type of trailer is a good use of a edit as it relates to the type of movie it is, and it slowly freezes time which the girl in the movie needs, as she wants to get away from everything and just freeze time.there are also times when the main character is shown at a normal speed but her surrounding is speeded up. This signifies how alone she is to the rest of the world, as nobody notices her and they get on with their own stuff while she if left behind. Towards the end of the trailer, the producer has edited it and rewinded all the events that have added up to make the girl want to commit suicide, and they are all rewinded in the order they appeared resulting in the girl raising her head from the water.

The costumes which the actors wear in the trailer are normal clothes which teenagers living in west London wear, showing how anyone can be affected by bullying, as the girl in the trailer is a normal teenager, but she is picked on and made to feel different. The actors themselves are young aged teenagers in 6th form to relate to the plot of the trailer. The setting of the trailer is in Greenford 6th form to show everyone that even people who are about to become young adults can be affected by bullying, and that this stuff happens when there are hundreds of other people around but nobody notices.

Different things link to eachother to create a greater effect in the trailer. The use of a long shot and a zoom in along with an edit slowing down the trailer creates a dramatic effect showing how the girl is distanced from everyone else, and how people around her don’t realise that shes even there. The slow down effect also shows us how she feels as everyone else gets by with their normal lives and how seperated she feels from everything.
